Peak shaving for cranes and lifts

Real world large loads, like cranes and lifts, exert high inrush on the grid when operating. At best case, this just causes the lights to flicker near the construction site. But more often than not, the local grid is not up to the task to support industrial loads like this, and sometimes grid is not available at all.

Therefore diesel gensets are often used. Unfortunately, this results in a need for massive oversizing of the genset itself. To power motor loads and VFD loads, one might need 2-3x larger genset than the power rating of the equipment.

There are some attempts to address this by connecting the genset to an inverter, to charge batteries, and then use another inverter to generate mains from those batteries. This is what the UPS industry calls ‘double conversion’. The disadvantages are numerous:

To sum it up, to power a 100kW crane, you would need a 100kW genset, 100kW genset-facing inverter, and 150kW peak rated grid-generating inverter. That’s a lot of gear and efficiency loss.

With ADVANTICS power modules, capable of running in parallel with the genset, you only need as much power as the difference between your genset power and the crane peak. In this case, a 50kW converter is more than sufficient to augment the genset, help with both peak loads and reactive loads (rectifiers, VFDs).

All the advantages of hybrid genset are still kept - capability to shut down the diesel genset when load is low, possibility to do a flying start to an already running genset, keeping the diesel genset loaded even if the load is low (by charging batteries), easily saving 60% of the fuel costs, without a need to ever recharge the battery system.
